Story of Samir and Ritu – Pokhara 2021

Let us hear stories of Samir and Ritu from representatives of Shelter Homes where they both stay.
Samir (name changed to protect anonymity) is an orphan, who lost both his parents to the floods in Surkhet. He has been with us since he was about 14 years of age. Before coming to us, Samir also had a fire-related injury, where part of his scalp was also burnt. Samir did not grow up in a good hygienic condition, which caused him to use various objects to clean his ear. This became a major cause for him to have ear infections multiple times in a year. Due to this issue, he was having difficulty hearing. This is when we decided to take him for a check-up at the Green Pastures INF Hospital in Pokhara, due to its specialty facility in Pokhara. After the check-up, it was found that both the ear drum’s in his ears were damaged. The doctor recommended surgery for the same. We as the New Life Children’s Haven, Surkhet, could not afford this surgery, but the INF team helped us to get this surgery done at a very good concessional rate. Samir is doing much better and can hear from the ear which was operated upon. We are very thankful to INF and the Green Pastures Hospital, Pokhara for their excellent treatment and their kindness towards our children.
Ritu Rokaya(name changed to protect anonymity) is from a very remote part of Nepal called Humla. She was abandoned by her mother after her father died. Ritu was brought to us by the Child Protection Services for care and protection. She had constant ear infections right from her childhood, due to neglect and also because she was living in very unhygienic conditions. Ritu was gradually losing her ability to hear, which was making it difficult for her to study or to build a relationship with others. She is a very quiet child and pre-disposed, she does not open up so clearly, partly due to her early childhood trauma of losing her father and being abandoned by her mother. We were very concerned about the issues related to her ear. We brought her for further check and treatment at the Green Pastures INF hospital in Pokhara for treatment. The doctor diagnosed that both of her eardrums were damaged and thus she would need surgery to repair the same. The New Life Children’s Haven, where both she and Samir come from could not afford such a surgery. But with kind help from the INF team, Ritu could get the needed surgery at a concessional rate.
We are thankful to INF and to the medical team at the Green Pastures Hospital in Pokhara for helping her to hear again. She is doing good and can hear properly from the ear that was operated. She is now waiting for her next surgery, to be able to have a complete hearing in both ears.
